the AMD 586 is a quad-clocked 486 clone (the Intel DX4 is actualy
tripple-clocked)
and the AMD chips are fully compatable with Intel's while the Cyrix ones are
not
the K5 was the first of the AMD pentiums.
I was running Linux (without EMC) on an AMD 486-120Mhz with 32megs ram for
a while ,it ran fine but X was a little slugish, especialy running Tcl/Tk
programs
so I dont know how well it would work with EMC but go ahead and try it and
let
us know how it works out ,if nothing else you will gain some Linux
experience
from it
last I looked a default workstation install of redhat 5.2 was about 350-400
megs
newer versions will probably take up a little more room for the same options
but
should still be less than 720megs
