There is usually one transformer on the power pole or in an underground vault
in the street that supplies several houses. You should see the scramble when
a pole transformer blows and PCB containing transformer oil is scattered
about. The power is carried to the home via a three wire system, older three
separate wires strung overhead, currently a three wire cable. One neutral
and as previously noted two "hot" wires 120 to the neutral and 240 between
them. Those "ground fault dectectors" are required in bath rooms, kitchens
and near pools etc where a water/electrical problem may be expected, but not
on outlets for simple lamps, tellys (hows that for a Britishism?) etc.
