Some 4-lead motors just use extra wires to carry more current. Some
have built-in
DC tachs - 2 wires for the motor, 2 for the tach. (The previous assumes
these are
brush motors.) There may be some brushless motors that have 4 motor
wires,
and of course, many steppers have 4 wires. Finally, a number of brush
servo motors
have wound field poles, instead of, or in addition to, permenent magnet
fields.

A brush-type, permanent magnet DC servo motor is just an ordinary brush
DC
motor that may have more linear characteristics, or less torque ripple
than some
other motors.
