Re: distance from controller to stepper

The longest motor cable run application I've encountered was 1,000
feet for use in a nuclear plant. The drive end was at 48VDC while the
motor saw 22VDC at its end. Everything ran fine but it did need 100uH
chokes in series with each motor lead at the drive to decouple the
cable capacitance, which was significant.

There is a "don't lower the river, raise the bridge" aspect here to
consider. Why not place the drive near the motor and run power down
the cable? Here's the tradeoff for a 7 Amp motor; 4 wires carrying 7
Amps each vs. 2 wires carrying 5 Amps or less (depending on load). Of
course you would have to send control signals as well, but the wire
gauge doesn't matter there.
