I taught machine shop at the local college and have a method that should
help you remember the XYZ thing.

1. Hold your right hand out like it was a pistol with your first finger
pointing forward (the barrell) and your thumb pointing up (the hammer).

2. Extend your middle finger so it is at right angles to the thumb and
first finger. The middle finger should be pointing to the left.

3. Call the first finger X, the middle finger is Y and the thumb is Z.

4. You can move the axes around and call the thumb or middle finger X if
you follow one basic rule. X, Y and Z proceed counterclockwise around the
extended digits. Thus if you select the thumb as X then the first finger
will be Y and the middle finger Z.

This is called the right hand rule. X,Y,Z - Y,Z,X - Z,X,Y...............
always counterclockwise. Now align your hand with the axes of the machine
and you will find it easier to determine machine coordinates. You can
rotate your hand as needed as long as you follow the above rules. Always
works!
