Wally: I did a Bridgeport conversion and can tell you what I have done. Take the crank handle off. Unbolt nut and crank slides
off. Then remove the scales. What you will find is an alloy (aluminum or zinc) plate with 3 - 1/4 x20 screws. This is your new
mounting point. It may not look like it but it can be if you want it to be.. Both the x and y axis are the same. At least on the
left end of the x axis anyway. I even mounted a stepper on the knee feed(my z axis). Same deal- that alloy plate with 3 screws. My
knee feed motor mounts directly to the left side. My y motor mounts to the right side but lower and close to the machine. The x
motor is mounted on the left end with the motor outboard so I lose no travel. Every axis is belt driven (2to1). The motor mounts are
machined from 1/2" plate aluminum. The x and y mounts are exactly the same. The z is at an angle. I machined a circular recess in
the back side of each plate. This is needed because the alloy plates with the 3 holes don't come flush with the casting. It might be
easier just to make a sheet metal shim or just 3 thick washers to space out the motor plate. These alloy plates(with the 3 holes are
actually holding in the bearings. The last step is to cut some tubing(5/8" ID) to slip over the shaft after you put the pulley on.
This is a distance piece to tighten up to the bearing. I just put a 3/4 box wrench on the y feed if I need to manually move that
axis. The x axis still has the right side hand crank. If you decide to power the knee let me know. The hub screws off. I struggled
with that for a while until I discovered that.
I hope that you are able to visualize what I have described. I have not altered any parts or drilled any hole in the machine. I just
used what is already there. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information. Carey
