I agree on simplicity, but don't agree that direct drive is actually
simpler. To do direct drive properly you need a zero backlash coupler and
then a mount that gives pretty accurate alignment as the couplers have
limited compensation capabilities. A reduction setup only requires a plate,
2 pulleys and a toothed belt. Pretty simple to make and very forgiving in
alignment and setup.
