When a beam of laser light is split and recombined, or diffracted through a
slit or grating, the coherency of the beam is disturbed (the wave fronts no
longer match up perfectly). Where the wavefronts are in phase, the
effective brightness is the sum of the two beams. Where the wavefronts are
180 degrees out of phase, they cancel each other out. Visually, this makes
circles or lines what look like ocean waves (called fringes). Fringes can
also be made in other ways. The spacing of the fringes is very precise and
dependant on the wavelength of the laser light.
