Fringes are the dark and light pattern that occurs when two light beams are
interfered. There are many ways these can be generated. They are most
easily seen with laser light, although there are many simple natural light
interferometers than have been used for many years.
A fringe is formed for every path difference of one wavelength of light,
about 24 microinches for red light. This high sensitivity is key to their
usefulness.
