Do Learn Build

Subject: What is everyone doing, building, wanting to
learn?
BACKGROUND:
Original field: physics;
stumbled into Wood technology;
taught self Autocad R14;
learned dxf export to CAM programs like FlashcutCNC
and Deskproto
DOING
Plan to cut wood, then later plastic. Metal is low
priority.
Using a machine with micron resolution for wood (and
plastic?) will be like using a canon to swat mosquito?
(responses welcome)
Hoping to come up with a cost-effective and easy way
of introducing CADCAM to primary and secondary school
children like www.denford.co.uk
Will appreciate any help, contribution, lead, perhaps
even participation (easy introduction to cadcam) in
that direction.
Tinkering with the idea of setting up a hobby cadcam
club.
Motivation: to learn myself plus to tempt my sons 17
and 19 years, plus their friends, plus my students to
get involved.
BUILDING
Plan to build a cost-effective CNC machine/machines
for educational purpose, which is sufficient to
illustrate the principles of CNC, for example, to
learn G-code. Perhaps for this purpose, a simple
home-built plotter and/or foam cutter, using stepper
motors and screw drives cannibalized from floppy disk
drives, printers, may even be enough. Any help,
contribution, participation, in this direction will be
highly appreciated
LEARN
Every relevant CNC lingo. May even take the trouble to
compile a glossary (example, exact defination of
pocketing = ?. contouring = ? etc. for posting to the
list if someone can point me to a useful textbook/s
where I can extract quickly the relevant terms)
