Some years ago there was some discussion in "Fine Woodworking" about tolerances in wood. I think the conclusion was that if one
held 0.005" for fits it was pretty good.

0.001" would be nice indeed. Those fits would work well with all the standard wood glues. Probably not enough room for epoxy.
