I have used a porter cable 690 (1-1/2 HP) router in 3/4 mdf all day
long at feed rates of 80-120 ipm... SINGLE PASS 'through' cutting.
Single flute spiral bit, upcut... compressed air cooling at the bit.
Good quality mdf (not home depot!)

First item to fail (except replacing dull cutters) was router
bearings. Replaced with higher grade, works like a charm...
MOST 'common' ww routers can be VASTLY improved by 'upgrading' the
bearings to grade 5 or better, IMO.
