2 have dimples in the sides of the heads and accept points filed on the
workpiece as 'headstock' and 'tailstock', the 3rd has its top flattened and
is knocked in between the other two as a tool rest - a la wood lathe. The
cutting tool is a length of 1/8" square tool steel - a 'graver' and power is
applied using a bow with its string just wrapped aroung the workpiece. Its
really just a simplified version of the 'watchmaker's turns' - the original
watchmakers lathe which is still used in the highest quality Marine
Chronometer work to achieve absolute concentricity on important parts and
exact fits. I still actually prefer using this type of equipment as it is
very relaxing and actually feeling the steel cut under your hand is very
satisfying.
