Dan, et al,
I made such a device for scratch tracing designs on clear acrylic sheet to
not only test out a file, but as a finished item. Mine has only 3 parts.
A hard steel stylus (antique phonograph needle), a small coil compression
spring and a short length of 1/4" dia brass rod. Spring and needle are
held in a close matching hole in the rod with grease. The spindle is lowered
to the work in minus depth to give the impression wanted. Also, I have a
similar device that holds a rollerball pen to test out a file or use as
a _really_ heavy duty plotter :-). I have a Sherline 5400 CNC.
