I used some buehler dc brush type motors with 200 CPR encoders with a direct
drive on the X axis of the sherline. I got 72 IPM which means that the 20
TPI leadscrew in the sherline was rolling along at 1440 RPM. I measured the
force using a spring scale at that speed and released the tension at 25lbs
which would probably cause significant deflection of the Z axis if you tried
to machine at that speed.
What really surprised me was after I posted that information on the Sherline
group there was not a single comment so I guess that there was really no
interest in it. Because I really thought this would be idea for the
Sherlines or other minimills.
