This is what I did, and it does work. I did relieve the 'uphill' flank
of the one tooth I left, and I used a courser pitch tap than the end
thread I wanted. This way, if I made a tiny error in relieving the
adjecent teeth, I'd still likely get a decent thread.
I should have shortened the tap, I'm sure it was flexing and chattering,
as taking a second pass at the same numbers did remove a bit more
material and gave a better finish.
One problem with taps however is they don't have common inch shank
sizes. No problem for my CNC, I have double angle collet holders, but
someone lacking such holders may have to silver solder the tap into a
common size shank.
