I think the biggest problem with trying to solder CAT-5 cables is that the
insulation melts back. It doesn't seem to take the heat very well. I
think CAT-5 cable is excellent for signal work. However use
insulation-displacement jacks/sockets. These can be set up with pair of
pliers squeezing the cap if a punch-down tool is not available. Ready made
cables with plugs can be obtained at any computer store. Plus they come in
different colors so a person can color-coordinate cables with machine
