  As Robin said, there is a reason the Hardinge slides cost so much - my
friends Hydraulic Hardinge has massive slides and are finished to extreme
precision. That said, I think that you could use the Taig x/y mill base for
this purpose, but with much lighter cuts - the main reason? The base is
mounted by three pieces of angle iron which are not meant to take the
cutting loads, on the mill they are just mounting feet and don't take any
load.
You would probably be better off buying an import x/y table and having it
reground precisely.
