there is a spindle encoder ,belt driven off the back side of the headstock
for threading (standard) or the C axis option ($$$)

they use a dedicated motion control card on a PC mainboard
in the control ,the software is next to useless without that card
so they dont need to lock it
the whole system boots from one floppy and loads into a ram disk
the part programs are stored on the 2nd floppy drive

we got ours in 94 with a 386 mainboard and upgraded to a 486
a couple years later ,its not super fast but it takes the light work
off the bigger lathes so they can do other things (hogging off 304 SS,etc)
