My 13" South Bend came from the dealer on 4x4 timber skids, bolted to
the feet. The've not come off the machine since I bought it, and
given that it tends to get moved yearly the lost accuracy due to
inability to level it perfectly/consistently has been made up for in
the ease of moving. We jack it up and use rollers under the timbers
for moving it around the shop, or put a 3/4" axle under the balance
point and some 8" plastic wheels, balance it by moving the carriage,
then grab the tailstock end and push it around like a wheelbarrow.

It shouldn't take much ingenuity to lift a lathe 4-6 inches and put it
on skids.
