I've changed my mind. I'm looking at the 16F627 or 16F628 now. Analog
comparitors for current measurement, Flash and standard PORT B interrupts
along with hardware UART !! So, it can have a serial link to a PC for
configuration or even future step control. I'm ordering some of them
tomorrow. I've got the basic circuit laid out and the rough draft program
framework laid out. I'll likely finish the board layout tomorrow evening and
start on the code later in the week when the chips get here.
