I keep staring at the TI and analog devices dsp chips for this application.
They have many chopper outputs, and they aren't too expensive, although a
lot more than the pic's. microchip just put out some motorcontrol chips.
Also many of the pics have a few channels of pwm, but i don't know how many.
You should be able to do chopper control on a bipolar stepper with two
channels right?

I can see that there might be mileage in using PICs to convert step &
direction into full phase control signals; however, using a PIC to emulate
the chopper control aspects of the 297 seems to be a non-starter.
