Bill,
90V DC motors are designed for use with full wave scr variable speed controllers.
The Surplus Center has these. 800-488-3407.
Call them up and ask for a p/n 11-2269 ($49.95).
These are an excellent (almost bullet proof) Minarik model 23001 5 Amp drive with
all the adjustments on an open chassis.
I bought a sack full for I am one by one converting all my machine tools to DC
variable speed drives.
You can use a variac but, you lose the feedback to give constant speed/torque.
