I understand what you are saying about the 5" being enough. For
most purposes it certainly is adequate. But, in a given setup,
you may not be able to change tool holders, collets, etc. without
moving the head. Some tools may be too long to get away from the
workpiece, others may be very different in length or width and
require some resetting. It is unlikely you will only use one
tool to complete a workpiece. This suggests that Z-travel, while
adequate, may may have a different start point for different
tools.
