The ozone will kill most germs but again, it will only kill those that it
can get at. It works by oxidising the the bacteria - burning them to death
and will get rid of any it comes into contact with including Legionella but
it won't penetrate dirt and slimes such as form between tiles, around
fittings, under edges etc. So, whenever the spa is running, the ozone will
be killing bugs but, when the spa is not in use, the ozone will evaporate
and the bugs which have been in hiding will come out and start multiplying
again. Normally this is not a problem but if the spa has not been used for a
while, there is a danger when it is first turned on. As ozonators, UV lamps
and electrochemical systems are usually located in the feed pipes to the
system pumps (because there is a limit to the amount of water such systems
can treat at any one time), it takes a little while for all the water to
pass through these pipes and so to be treated (it also takes a little while
for the bugs to die of course) and so the first few minutes of bubbling may
liberate viable organisms into the air in aerosols. This doesn't only apply
to spas, air conditioning etc, but also to shower heads which should also be
disinfected from time to time, especially after they have been unused for a
time. Wherever you have a water system which can cause spray either directly
or by bounceback from a hard surface and the system hasn't been used for a
while, it is wise to turn the system on and leave it to run for a few
minutes (5 or 10 or maybe more depending on the size of the system) before
you go near it. This will get rid of the bulk of the stagnant water from the
pipes and thus most of the bugs and will let any water treatment equipment
do its work.
