---The ring is used for facing. The hole is bored in the usual way and
when the correct dia is reached a stop is set on the body of the
boring head. the cutter is then screwed back to the start and set at
the bottom of the hole. with the spindle running the ring is held and
the cutter feeds out until it reaches the stop. This gives a smooth
finish to the bottom of a hole which is sometimes required.
Making an educated guess is not really fair on the guy that asked the
question.
