I found out that you can clean up the edge of a cut mirror with a
bench grinder. Go very slow, keep the edge wet to prevent local
hot spots, and keep the spot being ground moving. If you want
to make a round mirror, you can use wax or superglue to attach
the blank to an arbor and then use a toolpost grinder or die grinder
on the lathe to cut it to size. I have done this a few times with
replacement mirrors and "watch crystals" on dial indicators.
