FYI....I recently got some info re some venturi type burners that don't
require forced air to operate and they put out enough heat for melting steel
a bit quicker than with the forced air units!

Will give that a try too one of these days.

How long does it take for your furnace to heat up to the point where the
iron will melt to a pourable temp?

Hope you'll visit the HomeFoundry egroup site and post some info about your
furnaces and their use. Your experience with home foundry work would be
appreciated.
