Hello Tim.
Sad but isn't it better to get a higher resolution again for the
encoder?
With the building around my machine I had to modify the
building to fit the machine!
I positioned the Mill (nice 4 ton french Grafenstaden) on the basement
(60 cm concrete with triple 3/8 bar mesh) before I even had the roof
or walls. When I finished the building and wanted to use it a little
different
set up. I was forced to wag out part of the wall (50*70cm) and mount
a metal cage outside the building.
In your case it would be probably easier to mount the encoder via
a timing belt beside the motor.
On the encoder you have no forces so there you don't have to fear
about mismeasurements because of forcing the belt.
Perhaps that turns out to be a better option.
I personally are not a friend of turning a motor rotor.
Have a nice weekend.
