With the Gecko servo drives you have to remember you are driving them in
step mode so that it is important to not get the resolution so high the
software can not output the required pulse rate. With the 1000 line encode
it would take 4000 steps per motor revolution. I am putting this on the Z
axis which takes 20 motor turns per inch. So with the original encoder it
would have taken 80000 steps per inch. I am hoping for 60 IPM which means I
would have needed 80000 steps per second. A little tough for most of the
step and direction software to handle. Movement per step would work out to
.0000125 which sounds great for the ego, but is just not realistic. I will
probably go with a 200 line encoder I have on hand for 16000 steps per inch
requiring only 16000 steps per second at my target speed and giving a step
dimension of .0000625 which is plenty. I would actually like to use a 100
line encoder but figure I should use what I have instead of spending another
$80 or so to get one from US Digital.
