The optical mouse seem a good idea for those on a tight budget.
Anyone succeeded in using something like this as a kind of linear
encoder? How would one feed signals from an optical mouse into a CAM
or motor controller software like DeskWinNC, etc. I will really like
to hear from them. Purpose?

I may want to find the limitations of some combinations of
stepper/servo motor, drive, feedrate, etc. I want a way (criteria) to
determine when they become inadequate for the job, i.e., lose
steps, "stall?", slow down below target feedrate, etc. Any bright
ideas?
