laser transit

I have a laser transit I would like to use for levelling the ways of my router table. It is self levelling and accurate to better than .001 in/ft. However, I am unable to come up with a means of detecting surface height to this accuracy over short distances (120 inches).
Does anyone have ideas on how to utilize the laser beam, short of spending a fortune on an autocollimator lens system?
