Try setting the NAMESERVER parameter in etc/rc.confg - it worked for me ( I
think ) My entry looks like :

NAMESERVER="194.73.82.242 194.72.6.52 194.72.6.57"

You may want to enter the IP addresses of the DNS as used by your ISP.
Hope this helps too.
BTW Isn't Linux a sod to set up if you are new to it ?
