Nice to hear that at least someone was able to read through my explanation
and understand it !
I have a few drawings where I used a sliding section pushed by a yoke. In
some cases I thought it to add complexity. There would be more components to
make......... It certainly would work and if made in a tight little package,
and it would be excellent.
One additional concern is to keep the headstock thru hole clear for any
drawbar collet use. Your suggestion does that and that is good. It seems the
belt drive will be the best way and you are on the right track.
I do not have a headstock from a sherline. I thought about getting one
because it is probably the best market segment to start in with the concept.
I was impressed with the drive setup in the Ryobi lathe I mentioned. It hac a
variable DC motor with feedback. It is only about 2-1/2" in diameter unlike
some of the big motors I see people hanging on Taigs.
The ultimate is ONE motor with internal clutch ! I thought it would be nice
to find a suitable dual shaft DC motor and couple the stepper to the back
shaft. The Ryobi motor on the lathe I have has its rpm feedback module on the
back shaft. Obviously, you understand why the "conventional" motor CAN be
turned by the stepper without disengagement............
MG ?? no way ! I steer clear of owning cars I have to work on more than
drive ! :-)
