I built two application-specific lathes with "5C-only" spindles, for using 5C
collets AND the 5C-backplate 3-jaw chuck from Sherline. They were made from
4142 annealed (still hard!), and I used double-row angular-contact
double-sealed/shielded ball-bearings on the "nose end" and ABEC-7 single-row
DCC bearings on "left end". Lotsa work and $$, but fine stuff! OH: These
were for 3600 RPM ONLY; I have NO recommendations for metalworking, variable
speed. Perhaps tapered rollers better for that. No clue. Lotsa luck! Jan
