A Stepper motor is not quite as nice as a servo, but is usually MUCH
cheaper to implement and maintain and tune. As to which is better, it's a
lot like asking which is better, an egg or a strawberry. Depends on how
hungry you are, what you like , and how much money you have.
Many people in these type of discussions get into "my system has
.0000001 accuracy ( which they probably would in a room supercooled
to -270Degrees K with no heat expansion and no vibration. )Bottom line is a
stepper is easier and cheaper to use, where a servo is faster and more
expensive to maintain, but the defniite choice for a professional worried
about time to produce a given widget. For high-speed milling and such, the
servo is a clear winner, for wood routers and hobby work, the stepper far
surpasses a servo in terms of easy construction and maintenance.
