The reason is that the emc.var and also, I believe, the xx.ini files are
re-written
from the computer's memory back to disk whenever you shut down EMC.
If anything goes wrong (either in the program or by operator action) that
changes the info in the program, it changes the file, too. That is why it is
a good idea to have a copy of these files that doesn't get changed, in case
something happens there. The calibrate menu allows you to change things
related to motor performance from within the TkEMC GUI.
