Thanks for the info. I was able to get things working last night and I
downloaded the 801bin files. I followed the instructions but cannot find
the mini* files anywhere on the system.
Now, one thing I did wrong I think was to download the .txt file into the
nist81 folder as well. This gave me a tar file that was not the correct
format. Once I deleted the .txt and the tar that I created everything
worked as you described.
After the ./install there was a list of 5 or 6 programs, emc.run, emc.ini
etc., that were left alone. It didn't list anything that was installed.
Should I re-download everything and start again?
Thanks.
Oh yeah, I ended up editing the resolv.conf file rather than using the Kppp
DNS stuff because apparently the Kppp appends the DNS info to the
resolv.conf file only on use. If you check the file while not online the
file is empty. If you only use Kppp that's not a problem but if you use
anything else it won't work.
Should I write and post my experiences to keep in some kind of newbie file?

resolv.conf only says, "search localdomain." That criptic remark hasn't
stopped my system from connecting to most any domain name that is valid.
If you are worried about /etc/resolv.conf you could create it yourself with
kwrite and then save it in /etc as resolv.conf.
under MS Windows either.
