Smoke and list.
I keep mentioning this but look at www.solid-edge.com and go to the
free [ NOTE FREE!!!! ] software section and you can get a working
copy of Origin for FREE. This is actually Solid Edge V7.0
It's the same as Solid Works in it's capabilities. The free one can
save, print, export as a picture and even save as an STL file for use
in Millwizard and Stlworks.
What it can't do is put more than one model together for an assembly
and if you generate a 3D view in the draft version it will print but
won't save.If you want to save as 3D you need to pay $400 to upgrade
the free edition. Full control over assembly requires the full 4K
package.
This Origin package is about 1K's worth of software absolutly free

There is also an educational version available in the UK, don't know
if it's available in the US, for 49 UKP [ $66.00 ] that is completely
unlimited.
This is the newer V 9.0 and has the Engineering Handbook built in.
This is a design program where you fill in design criteria and it
then generates and draws the part for you. Does gears, pullies, and a
lot of other mechanical parts. Very powerful.
Both CD's have a very good tutorial section on that you can work
through in your own time.

Where the Solidworks educational copy comes unstuck is that every
drawing has Education Demo splatted all across it. It also more
expensive and only on a 2 year licence, so you pay out $250, spend 2
years really getting to know this and then wham it don't work any
more and you have to pay 4K out just to carry on.
