I have the Newall systems on my compact 8 lathe and knee mill, they
are great! I had posed this question ages ago here on the list. As I
recall, someone mentioned a chip that would make reading the scales
(tubes filled with precision ground balls) easier.
I also suggested using a MR head to read a magnetically encoded
scale in a similar fashion to a credit card encoding. Encoding
magnetic tape with the bits would be fairly easy if someone could
work out the readheads.
