Yes, it would be great if we could come up with something like
that. Or "krlux" <lux@...> gets his version going.

In the meanwhile, I came across the Escala DRO
http://www.cncmasters.com/dro_page.htm

which seem to have pretty reasonable pricing. Also
of interest is that they can go up to 12 feet long
(at 0.000 20" repeatability). I've never bought them,
this is just an observation.
