Dan,
Here's what I suggest. Get a 500VA isolation transformer (115 VAC in,
115 VAC out) Take the output to a 500VA Variac. Get the kind that
goes from 0 to 140 VAC. Use a 400V, 10A bridge rectifier and a 10,000
uF, 250 VDC filter capacitor. This will give you 0 to 197 VDC output
with 2.5 volts ripple at a 3 amp load. Use a 10K, 5W bleed resistor
across the cap. Fuse the DC output with a 5A fast-blo fuse and be
careful.
