Carbide works fine - just feed really lightly until you get under the
thread. Hardest part is holding the screw - one isn't supposed to use
the crest diameter of a rolled screw as a reference surface. I did
anyway, but there were those who suggest a 4-jaw chuck and carefully
indicating on the minor diameter.

I'd say try machining the bearing diameter a bit oversize and see how
good you can get it, then decide if you need to build the grinder -
except that if you are going to do it, you probably want to do it all
in one go without removing the screw from the lathe.
