I use cemented carbide with the ballscrew mounted in a 5c
collet. The lands on some screws are not accurate datum
points so other methods that have been mentioned (wire,
4 jaw) must be used.
The ball races can be indicated by setting up the dial indicator
on the lathe carriage with threading engaged at the ballscrew pitch.
I use a Themac J40/45 tool post grinder for the last thousandth. Just as
good results can be obtained by honing
with 120 grit abrasive paper. Tenths matter.
I mill keyways on an Index vertical mill. I usually mill two
keyways 180 degrees apart to prevent warping from internal
stress.
The biggest timesaver I can offer when machining hardened
screws is to first rough grind off the hardened outer surface
with a hand angle grinder- being careful not to go too far. Then the only
hardened area to machine is just a shoulder.
