There are a lot of posts from folks just getting into CNC who are
looking for software. EMC is the preferred choice for many of us,
but not everyone is willing learn about linux, install a new OS, etc
just to try it. The "Brain Dead Install" (BDI) CD helps, but you still
have to be willing to partition your drive and have a video card
that is supported by stable drivers. In other words, the barrier
to entry is still pretty high.
However, there has long existed a method for installing an entire
linux system inside a single large file on an MS-DOS-formatted
partition. This, along with a rewrite of one of the EMC user
interfaces to run in text mode, would seem to eliminate most of the
stumbling blocks. You would still have to reboot the machine to
switch between EMC and dos/windows, but you can undo the install with
a few delete commands.
Those who found such an introductory system workable might soon want
to do a full install.
What do others think?
