yes, really there are allready two text mode UIs
keystick uses the curses library and
emcpanel uses the standard C library (printf() , etc.)

but both are rather limited ,with small text that is hard to read
when your stretched over the machine trying to do something
and they have fewer features than the new GUIs

a big block font that can be read from across the room on a text
mode display could give many of the improvements of the GUIs
and be easeier to get everything to work 'out of the box'
