ASSUME you mean by this question.

End-ony supported 1/2" shafting may be "OK" for 4" between supports, for any
metalworking machine. In other words, NO! Use continuous support! Better:
Use the newer-concept "grooved" THK rails, or crossed-roller type rails (have
seen only in pictures, never used, yet).

For even light alum.-only milling, you need RIGIDITY, and end-supported round
ways do NOT cut it (pun unintentional!).

Now, if you have a special situation where you MUST use end-only-supported
round ways, use the very-fattest you can POSSIBLY fit-in! I did a
woodworking X-Y machine in '85/6 with 2" dia. Class-L shaft-ways. STIFF!
But the alternative was not at all possible. HEAVY stuff! (If you have to
ask, you can't afford it)
