Gary,
Instead of taking the spindle out, replace the belts with link-type v-
belts. These belts are made up of links which snap together to
create any length belt. Link-type belts are better than conventional
belts.
I'm looking at my Grainger catalog, they're PowerTwist brand. Not
cheap, but much easier than removing your spindle. Maybe some one on
the list knows of a retail source if you don't access to Grainger.
Where ever you buy, be sure to get the correct size (cross section).
They come in A(4L), B(5L) and C size, match to your broken belt.
Unless you have some experience with spindle bearings, I recommend
not fooling with them. You can get into a real can of worms, besides
those bearings may not be standard off the shelf variety. And
Sheldon is long ago out of business (another company took over their
parts, you might find their price on bearings would be more than the
lathe is worth).
good luck,
Doug
