Help w/ Sheldon Lathe

Hi,
I've been lurking on this group for about a year now and have been very
impressed with everyone's knowledge on cnc conversions and retrofits. Just
wanted to say that first....
I have a problem, that I was hoping someone could help me out with before I
mess up something.
The drive belts broke on my late model Sheldon 11" lathe w/ backing gears
and "no manuals". I don't know how to remove the spindle to get the new
belts on. So far, I've removed everything I could. The spindle appears to be
in 2 parts: a big spindle (2.75") and a smaller spindle (1.25"). The large
spindle is where the chuck screws on and a large backing gear lives. The
smaller spindle has the drive pulleys/backing drive gear assembly which free
wheels on it, as well as the gears that drive the gearbox. The smaller
spindle is somehow inserted into the larger one. I have to remove the
smaller spindle to remove the drive pulley assembly to replace the belts.
I'm not sure if the spindles are screwed or pressed together or the
procedure to separate and reassemble them.
Now that I have this apart, I was also going to replace the bearings. The
large spindle is seems to have a collar in front of the bearing. I can't
tell if this collar is screwed or pressed on or how to remove it to replace
the bearing.
Any help would be appreciated.
cheers,
