You don't need a dedicated machine for that. I have IP firewall running
on my Linux machine, that is also my primary email machine, local email
server for my kids, web server, etc. With IP routing, IP masquerade and
firewall running, this machine transparently serves web access to all
the other machines we have, and hides them from the net because they
have local net addresses (like 10.10.1.2) which are not valid over the open
internet. This allows me pretty good security, and also allows me to have
email for several people and web access for several computers without paying

my ISP extra for that priveledge. So far, I'm untouched by viruses.
